Neera is an economically important palm tree native to
tropical Asia, from eastern India to Malaysia, Indonesia
and the Philippines. Common names include Sugar Palm,
Neera Palm, Black-fiber palm, Gomuti Palm, Aren, Irok
and Kaong. It is a medium-sized palm, growing to 20
metres, with the trunk remaining covered by the rough
old leaf bases. The fruit is 7 cm in diameter, changing
from green to black when it matures.
