Balung Java Tea (also known as Misai Kucing Herbal Tea) is traditionally used for kidney bladder stones, liver, gallbladder, diabetic problems and urinary tract infections as it has a mild diuretic action which is useful for flushing the kidneys and urinary tracts. It is also used to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. It is also taken for rheumatism and gout, although its effectiveness for these problems has not been scientifically verified. Researchers have found it to be mildly antiseptic as well.

The Java Tea plant is an herbaceous shrub which grows to a height of 1.5 meters. It is a popular garden plant because of its unique flower, white and bluish with filaments resembling a cat's whiskers. In the wild, the plant can be seen growing in the forest and along roadsides.
